Ricky Lao, director of product planning at Hyundai Motor North America, emphasized the vehicle's dual nature, stating, "The 2025 IONIQ 5 N has surpassed all internal expectations for Hyundai's first electric performance vehicle. Judges conducted evaluations during summer 2024, focusing on performance and powertrain enhancements. The IONIQ 5 N impressed with its ability to simulate internal combustion engine characteristics, including sound, power delivery, and transmission-like shifts.
Wards Editor-in-Chief Bob Gritzinger praised the vehicle, saying, "This is a stellar example of what an engineering team can do with a battery-electric vehicle when given carte blanche to make it look, feel, sound and perform like its internal-combustion brethren."
The 2024 awards cycle, marking the 30th year of the competition, saw 34 nominees vying for recognition. Judges assessed new or significantly updated propulsion systems, with overall value remaining a key consideration despite the absence of a price cap.
